Common Applications
Cartesian Thermal Box - The modern world's battery
The Cartesian Thermal Box is ideal for commercial and institutional buildings where heating and cooling demands fluctuate throughout the day. By storing chilled or hot energy using phase-change materials (PCM), it supports peak shaving and load shifting, allowing facilities to charge the system when energy is inexpensive or demand is low, and discharge it during peak hours. This makes it especially valuable in offices, hospitals, schools, airports, data centers, and district-energy systems, where stabilizing thermal loads improves plant efficiency and reduces operating costs. Its modular design means systems can be right-sized for both retrofit and new-build applications, and the wide –20 °C to 120 °C operating range allows integration across hydronic heating and cooling systems.
In industrial and process environments, the Thermal Box helps manage heat recovery, temperature buffering, and backup thermal capacity, ensuring thermal continuity and reducing strain on boilers, chillers, and heat pumps. The PCM-based storage supports applications including ice storage for cooling at 0 °C, low temp heating system, medium-temperature storage for comfort cooling, and higher-temperature storage for hydronic heating systems up to 120 °C. With a service life of more than 25 years and very low standby heat loss, the system delivers long-term value and resilience while supporting decarbonization strategies by enabling higher efficiency heat-pump operation, especially given the increased use of heat pumps in North America.
